In the world of cosmetics, beauty products, and fragrances, packaging design is a game-changer. Aside from the inherent function of packaging (to protect and preserve the products within), the way it catches the eye, invites fingertips to touch it, builds brand identity, and/or resonates with specific target markets, is paramount. A 2022 consumer research study found that, “many cosmetic goods are purchased as a result of point-of-sale decisions…and visual cues at the time of sale are critical to the decision-making process.” But how do you go about distinguishing your product on a crowded retail shelf?
At SupremeX, we’ve been leaders in folding carton solutions for cosmetic packaging for decades. Having worked with many leading fragrance and beauty product brands, we understand the importance of creating packaging that stands out. While many design elements are key, finishes are among the most critical. From matte to glossy and windowed to foil stamped, the unique finish you choose will send a vital message about your brand and product to potential customers.
Let’s take a look at some of SupremeX’s most popular techniques for creating state-of-the-art beauty product packaging:
Finishes for Beauty Product Packaging
Hot Foil Stamping
Hot foil stamping uses pressure to transfer a customized thin metallic foil design to packaging. It’s one of the more costly finishes and often preferred for premium or luxury products.
Spot UV
This finishing technique involves coating a specific portion of packaging material with a glossy finish to make it stand out from its background. For example, words, images, or a logo might be contrasted in high gloss on a matte background.
Embossing & Debossing
Embossing is the raising of a logo, image, or text to create a 3-dimensional effect. Debossing is the opposite—where an indent of your logo, image, or text is achieved. Both techniques are unique and can set your product apart on a crowded shelf.
Window Patch
A window patch is a thin plastic film that’s applied to a packaging cut-out. It’s a great way to provide customers a sneak peak of the product within the packaging without risking damage to or contamination of the product itself.
Lamination
Lamination involves a thin layer of plastic film being applied over your packaging’s text and images to enhance its design and protect it from water or other damage. Common lamination options include soft touch/silk and anti-scratch.
Aqueous Coating
An aqueous coating is a more environmentally friendly alternative to lamination. A water-based coating is applied to packaging to enhance and protect it without using plastic. Aqueous coatings can be used to achieve satin, soft-touch, or glossy packaging.
UV Coating
UV coating is another option for achieving more robust protection for your packaging. UV coatings are less flexible than aqueous coatings.
