The press operator is responsible for preparing, setting up, operating, and performing basic maintenance on the offset printing press in order to print carton sheets that meet the company’s technical specifications, quality standards, and productivity requirements.
The operator works closely with assistant press operators, the prepress department, and the production team to ensure optimal machine performance and consistent print quality throughout the production run.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare, adjust, and operate the press according to job ticket specifications and established quality standards;
- Perform press makereadies, including ink, dampening, registration, pressure, and sheet-handling settings;
- Read and interpret layouts, mock-ups, color profiles, plates, and all technical specifications provided by prepress;
- Ensure color accuracy and consistency (density, gray balance, registration, gloss, sheet-to-sheet uniformity);
- Conduct continuous quality checks, including color, registration, marking, scumming, scratching, powder, and more;
- Optimize press performance to minimize downtime, waste, and material losses;
- Perform basic press maintenance (roller cleaning, blanket changes, lubrication, mechanical checks);
- Complete production reports accurately, including color data, and report any issues to the supervisor;
- Work closely with assistant press operators to maintain a safe and efficient workflow;
- Follow all internal procedures and occupational health and safety standards;
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment;
- Perform any other related tasks as assigned.
Requirements:
- Relevant experience as a press operator, ideally printing on carton board
- Knowledge of the printing process.
- Understanding of properties used for folding cartons.
- Ability to perform precise mechanical adjustments and troubleshoot technical issues;
- Excellent color perception and strong attention to quality;
- Ability to work as part of a team, strong sense of responsibility, and autonomy;
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, production-oriented environment;
- Availability to work various shifts (day, evening, night) as required;
- Ability to stand for extended periods;
- Attention to detail, thoroughness, and strict adherence to quality standards.
- Bilingual (for communications with divisions outside Quebec)
